How A Growing Family Transformed Their House Into Their Forever Home

Starting a family is one of life’s most exciting chapters. It’s a time filled with anticipation, joy, and plenty of planning. For one growing family, this new beginning also meant reimagining their home to better suit their future. Their journey started with a heartfelt inquiry:

“We are planning on moving into my grandmother’s home sometime in 2024. Before the move, we’d like to complete a renovation. We are due with our first baby in January, so we’re not in a huge rush, but we really need guidance on price expectations and timeline. We’re looking to renovate two bathrooms, a sunroom, a kitchen, and possibly a basement depending on the budget. We’re not sure where to start and definitely need some help.”

Guiding a Family Through Their Renovation Journey

With such a significant life transition ahead, we knew it was essential to prioritize and guide them step by step. Our first focus? The heart of the home: the kitchen. It’s where family life thrives, from first cups of coffee to baby’s first meals and beyond.

We started by listening to their needs and dreams, ensuring their vision aligned with their timeline and budget. From there, we worked together to design a kitchen remodel that would become the foundation for their growing family’s daily life.

Opening Up the Space: A Kitchen Meant for Connection

One of the most significant transformations in this remodel was removing a 14-foot wall that divided the kitchen and living room. By doing so, we opened up the space, creating a seamless connection between the dining area, kitchen, and living room. The result was an inviting, open-concept layout designed for gathering, entertaining, and making memories.

The homeowners took on the demolition work themselves, allowing us to step in and handle the installation of new electrical and lighting, cabinetry, and countertops. Once our work was complete, they finished the painting, adding a personal touch that made the space truly theirs.

Designing a Kitchen for Everyday Life

The original kitchen layout featured a U-shaped design that restricted movement and closed off the dining area. To enhance functionality and maximize seating, we reconfigured the kitchen into an L-shaped layout along two walls. A large island became the focal point—ideal for meal prep, casual dining, and, in the future, school projects and family conversations. Pendant lights above the island added warmth and character, while a spacious pantry cabinet near the window provided additional storage.

Enhancing the Living Area

Beyond the kitchen, thoughtful updates extended into the living room. We introduced new lighting and removed outdated spindles and a half-wall near the front door, helping to create a more cohesive and modern space. Additional electrical outlets were installed for convenience, and ductwork from the removed wall was relocated to an inconspicuous spot near the stairs.

Balancing Budget and Design

Like many homeowners embarking on a remodel, they faced budget considerations. Initially, their cabinet selections exceeded the budget, but by collaborating closely, we identified an alternative cabinetry option that maintained quality while reducing costs. Quartz countertops remained a priority investment, bringing a polished, high-end feel to the finished kitchen.

Thoughtful Material Selections

  • Kitchen Cabinets: Marillat Signature, Shaker-style, painted finish.
  • Flooring: Luxury vinyl plank (installed by the homeowners).
  • Countertops: White quartz with brown veining.

The Remodeling Process: Step by Step

Our work began after the homeowners had completed the demolition. We removed outdated soffits and the dividing wall, then coordinated with HVAC, plumbing, and electrical professionals to update the space. Minor framing adjustments were made before installing and finishing the new drywall. From there, cabinetry, countertops, and final details brought the kitchen to life.

The Power of a Thoughtful Process

For this family, the renovation process was as important as the result. They appreciated having a clear roadmap, from setting realistic expectations to making informed decisions at each step. We pride ourselves on turning what could feel overwhelming into a manageable, enjoyable experience.

We provided detailed timelines, regular updates, and flexible options to ensure their vision came to life within their budget. By focusing on open communication and expert guidance, we helped them transform not just their kitchen, but also their outlook on the renovation process.

Lessons Learned: Creating a Home That Lasts

  • Plan ahead: Making material selections early prevents delays and ensures a cohesive design.
  • Think long-term: Choosing durable, timeless finishes means the space will remain functional and stylish for years to come.
  • Open spaces bring families together: Removing barriers, both physical and aesthetic, creates a more welcoming and connected home environment.

This remodel wasn’t just about updating a kitchen—it was about shaping a home where this family’s story could unfold. From morning coffee to future celebrations, this transformed space is ready for a lifetime of memories.
